Services: Calgary River Valleys is a non-profit watershed stewardship group. We were formed in 1991 to provide independent input to policy & large planning proposals in Calgary, especially where these proposals impact our rivers, creeks, and wetlands. We consider ourselves "the voice of our rivers." In addition to the planning input, we work on a few major projects each year, including the annual Brown Trout Redd (spawning nest) Count in the Elbow River in Calgary, and in 2018 we began an annual "Riverbank Makeover" project with funding mainly from City of Calgary Water Resources. For this Riverbank Makeover project, we have worked with a different selected homeowner each year to re-plant their riparian area (the river-adjacent land) to improve its ecological function. For this project we replace the non-native short grass with native riparian plants, provide education to river-adjacent homeowners regarding best practices for caring for the riparian area, and monitor the success of the re-planted bank over time. We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities to participate in these projects and in providing input to the planning process in Calgary.
